- This area covers two adjacent literatures: the extracellular matrix, meaning collagen and elastin synthesis and the signaling that governs matrix turnover, and melanocortin-receptor biology, meaning pigment cell signaling and melanogenesis. Both are studied at the level of the pathway rather than the appearance of a tissue.
Much of the published work on these compounds is preclinical: binding and activity assays in cell culture, followed by animal models. A finding in one of those systems describes that system, and reading it more broadly goes beyond what the research shows.
