Scientific overview

SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller class of mitochondria-targeting peptides. Research indicates that SS-31 interacts with cardiolipin, a specialized phospholipid concentrated within the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin plays an important structural and functional role in mitochondrial cristae organization, electron transport, and oxidative phosphorylation. Experimental research has therefore examined SS-31 in models involving mitochondrial membrane organization, cytochrome-c interactions, electron transport, ATP synthesis, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial bioenergetics.
